Domestic violence and abuse

Domestic violence or abuse can happen to anyone and involves physical, emotional or sexual abuse between partners or family members. It is about power and control over the victim. Recognizing the signs and getting help early is important.

Support is available through helplines like the National Domestic Abuse Helpline for women, Men’s Advice Line for men, and Galop for LGBT+ people. Emergency contacts include calling 999 or specialized services. Email support is also available. Resources like the Survivor’s Handbook provide information on legal rights, housing, finances and more. Abusers can get help from Respect.

You do not have to wait for an emergency situation to find help. If domestic abuse is happening to you, it’s important to tell someone and remember you’re not alone.

Signs of abuse include emotional abuse like belittling, isolating from loved ones, controlling money and demands. Threats and intimidation like invading personal space and stalking also occur. Physical abuse involves hitting, choking, burning. Sexual abuse means unwanted touching, demands or rape. Feeling afraid and changing your behavior are also indicators.

If you are planning to leave, get advice on safety planning beforehand. Tell someone you trust, but not the abuser. Women’s Aid and Men’s Advice Line have guidance on leaving safely.

Friends of victims should listen non-judgementally, acknowledge their strength in talking, emphasize it’s not their fault, allow them to make their own choices on leaving, and share information about support organizations. Do not tell them to leave if they aren’t ready. Offer to accompany them to report injuries or assault.

Domestic violence often begins or worsens during pregnancy. Support is vital as leaving is when the most danger can occur. But with the right help, those experiencing abuse, whether physical, emotional or other forms, can regain safety, autonomy and peace. They need to know they have options and that support is out there when they are ready.
